Tidy Towns Tips - Backyard Burning of Waste

BACKYARD BURNING OF WASTE

In Ireland the majority of waste is disposed of at Landfill, with a smaller percentage being recycled. Some households and businesses are however burning waste on their own property. The materials burned are varied and include paper, cardboard, textiles, timber, food, garden clippings, plastics and even household chemicals. This “Backyard Burning”, as it is known, is mistakenly seen as a cheap form of waste management and many presume that it is not harmful to the environment. Nothing could be further from the truth. Practically all uncontrolled low temperature burning of wastes release toxic pollutants directly into the air without treatment or filtering. This is one of the major sources of some pollutants impacting on air quality in Ireland today. The practice of “Backyard Burning” is not permitted. Donegal County Council want to advise members of the public and business proprietors that the backyard burning of waste is not permitted and is not an accepted means of waste treatment.

Any individuals engaging in this practice could face prosecution under Section 24 (2) of the Air Pollution Act 1987.

Businesses should also be aware that if they burn waste they are also in breach of

  • Section 32 of the Waste Management Act 1996 and
  • The Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations 2003

For further advice on how to dispose of your waste in an appropriate manner or to find out about recycling in County Donegal contact the Waste Awareness Officer, Donegal County Council on (074) 91 72538.
